Food photography IGA Festive Season

We were enlisted by long time collaborators March One to work with them on the 2018 Christmas campaign for IGA. Food photography is my personal favourite. The multi-layered brief required us to cover stills while the TVC was being shot, as well as a stand alone 3 day shoot to cover images for the website, social media, and catalogue.

Andrew & Dave in action!

Within the brief for social media and website content, we had to create animations and short instructional videos.  For the 3 day shoot we hired a house in Bronte. It provided a kitchen to suit the work and also allow us different areas to shoot in.

Kai, worked hard on the styling for the food photography making sure everything was ready at the right time. One of the ice-cream cakes wanted to melt very quickly and caused us some issues, for example, but also showed us we needed to do the 2nd one in a different way.

For the stills content, Christmas decorations in the styling were to be kept to a minimum as it was to be used over the whole summer holiday season, not just in the run to Christmas. We used pieces from the “how to” videos we were making to style and decorate the final food products and show in a real way how they can be used. Things like chocolate cups to build the banofie pie in, or how to glaze and carve a ham.

Kai & clients pondering cheese placement

The shoot went fairly smooth all in all, with 3 of us from the studio on hand, we didn’t run into any real problems.

Kai’s cutlery collection

TVC stills were shot around Taren Point and surrounding areas. We captured behind the scenes shots of the whole shoot, building a library of stills that could be used in various ways to support the TVC. Between shots, we needed to get some options of stills for a catalogue cover using the talent that was booked for the TVC so it all tied together.

One of the biggest challenges on the day was to work around the very busy film crew (Ideas of Dean) who had to cram lots of scenes into one long shooting day, so there was no time to stop or for us to hold them up at all.  Add to this how many people were actually involved on the TVC part of the shoot and it made for an interesting long day. In the end we got the shots for the cover that were needed as well as a huge range of other stills that can be used to support the TVC and give the whole campaign a consistent look and feel.

Awesome to work with this guy, so professional.

Cheers, Andrew.

Jeans for Genes ad campaign

4 year old boy with genetic disorder smiling

Sydney agency March One commissioned us to photograph the loveliest group of kids for the “Jeans for Genes” campaign.  Each child that appears in the print ads has a genuine genetic disease, some of them life threatening.

6 year old girl with leukaemia advertising jeans for genes day

We always enjoy shooting alongside the film crew from Ideas of Dean who were filming the ad for TV/cinema/web. The separate crews took it in turns working with each child to and try and capture their wonderful personalities.

6 year old boy with autism for jeans for genes day

We came away from the day feeling privileged to have met these great kids and their families. It was a reminder not to take little things for granted, which these kids can’t. We loved seeing their gorgeous faces on the finished banners lining the streets of the city.  Jeans for Genes Day is coming up on Friday 3rd August (tomorrow!!), please give generously if you can – Jason.

Ferrero Rocher "Unwrap Magic"

It’s been a while since our last Blog Post as the team at the Studio Commercial have been all consumed with the trials of renovating our new premises and the logistics of moving an entire studio (more on that later)

In any case for the Christmas period, we photographed a series of promotional pieces in our studio for Ferrero Rocher.

I say “we” as these  type of shoots are very much a team effort with assistants, art directors, stylists etc.

This was a very enjoyable and rewarding shoot, and as you can imagine there were certain perks to the assignment, especially for those in the team like myself who are addicted to chocolate 🙂

Refreshingly in today’s age of of digital magic, the two “unwrap magic” shots (destined for print) were captured in one set and in one shot (almost).

The “Countdown to Christmas” imagery, (which was destined for online and TV use with some animation) was photographed in stages so that various image elements could be moved easily in post production.

Client: The Kinetic Agency.

Toshiba X20

Earlier this year we photographed the Toshiba X20 for a promotion in print, on the web and for brochures under direction from advertising agency Vitamin X Creative at Bondi.

Shooting electronic goods is certainly rewarding and achieving the required slick finish was challenging. Perhaps this is because like the products themselves, the shots need to be extremely precise and clean.  The real products surfaces are highly reflective and tend to highlight any fingerprints and any slight specks of dust. This probably why many of these type of images are often computer generated themselves.

Having said that, retouching was certainly part of producing the final images, most of which was carried out in house here at Studio Commercial.

KONE Elevators

KONE Elevators are on the up… (yes we’re not fond of newspaper style headlines either but there you have it). An interesting shoot none the less for Kone Australia brochures.

Samsung "Fill your fridge"

The Samsung “Fill your fridge” promotion was a photoshoot we completed for Momentum agency.

The fridge itself was huge and only just fit through our front door, it certainly took plenty of food to fill it!

On the photography side, shiny metal objects (particularly large ones), are notoriously technical to shoot and this one proved to be no exception. Lighting this Goliath required a very large and even source so we used large scrims and even our cyclorama itself as a huge reflector.

As a side note, so impressed by the fridge was Jason, soon after the shoot purchased the exact same model for his new house, he loves it!

Food styling by Ben Masters.

Surf Life Saving

We got more than our feet wet when we shot for the 2016 Surf Life Saving Foundation direct mail campaign. This assignment was quite literally a refreshing change from a studio shoot.

Our photo brief called for POV shots of a swimmer in trouble. So we donned the wetsuit, grabbed an underwater housing and jumped on into the surf.

Funnily enough, although the conditions were ideal for a regular day out at the beach, being fine and sunny, this didn’t quite match the original concept look and feel.  As this called for a sense of fear and foreboding, a post production colour treatment brought the images in line with the concept from the March One agency.

Gentleman Jack - Dare to Triumph

On outdoor location shoots there is always gamble with the weather. This was rather appropriate given that this photoshoot was destined for a promotion being run in the Crown Casino Perth where some lucky patron is going to ride away on a Triumph Motorcycle. Fortunately, with the threat of rain looming we were spared any dramas from the sky. Even better, the conditions were ideal for the mood of the shots. From a personal point of view this was a rewarding shoot where everything came together nicely.

This assignment was commissioned and art directed by the team at Dynamix agency.

Happy Mardi Gras!

An alcohol shoot with a different bent!

As this post goes live, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is underway.  With the main event of the parade itself taking place on the 5th of March.

We shot this “Celebrate Diversity” promotional campaign in conjunction with Dynamix agency and certainly think it captured the fun and flamboyant atmosphere of the party.  As sponsors of the event, Finlandia Vodka and Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire make the perfect couple and are sure to spice things up.

Jack Daniels & Co "The Spirit of Summer"

For those of us who like to have the odd cocktail or two, here’s a little offering of images that we photographed in conjunction with Dynamix agency and Brown-Forman, “The Spirit of Summer” promo. This shoot was especially enjoyable at the end of the day…  Jack Daniels Sinatra comes highly recommended!

"Hipsters" TV Series by Samuel Johnson

Hipsters is a TV Series presented by Samuel Johnson. The series was aired on SBS in March this year. We shot this promotional photography in the local Sydney streets of Newtown for SBS (through March One Agency). Another fun and rewarding shoot, this time with one of Australia’s most likeable TV personalities.

Paypal

Working with the agency Dynamix, we had a great deal of fun on this photoshoot for the Paypal free return shipping promotion.  During the shoot there was a great deal of role playing happening on set, under the pretext that our subject hadn’t quite got their online shopping order right.

Grand Designs - season 4

Jason: It was great to catch up again with Peter Maddison, the Grand Designs Australia host, we’ve been shooting Peter since series 1 and I’ve always found him to be a genuinely nice guy, we always have a lot of fun on the GDA shoots.  The photoshoot was in our studio this time around, working with March One advertising agency, we were given several background images to combine into a single background plate and then shoot Peter to match the lighting and perspective.  A relatively straight forward studio shoot, the challenge was for Cameron to make it all come together in retouching.

Cam: I had a lot of fun with the post production on this project and was very pleased with how the image came together. Following Art direction given by March One agency we created the promo image by combining Jason’s shots of Peter with a number of supplied stock elements. Matching colours and perspectives was the key here to achieving a dramatic but realistic feel to the imaginary Australian outback dream house.

March One Promax Advert

Working with our friends at March One Advertising agency on their advertisement for Promax. This years music video look was dreamt up by art director Samantha Buckley. All props and styling were sourced by March One. Hair and make up by Rafal Gaweda.  Shot in our space here at Studio Commercial.

Shelta Outdoor Furniture

We have been commissioned to shoot for Shelta Australia Outdoor Furniture on a number of occasions over the years.  This time around we utilised three separate houses around Sydney as our backdrop.  I’ve always found it to be a fun and professional shoot that showcases our ability to take on and deliver on a diverse range of assignments.

Production and art direction – Geoff King, Styling – Denby Dowling.

Balmain Private

Balmain Private‘s business is providing online investments in stand-alone first mortgages.  For their website, they wanted to show a range of every day clients “virtually” choosing their online investments.  We provided full service for the client from finding models to hair & make-up to the photoshoot and retouching, a very fun shoot!

The Salvation Army

This photoshoot commissioned by the Salvation Army is designed to show the heritage of their organisation. The subjects are real Salvation Army officers that have been photographed separately. The background was supplied and the lighting on the subjects had to match this. Studio flashes were filtered through coloured gels to achieve the same tones found in the background. The advertisement was used across different print media included magazines, light boxes and Sydney buses.

March One Advertising Agency

This shoot was for our friends at March One Advertising Agency. The concept was by the senior designer Dan Crozier (the guy in the middle). The image features the staff of the agency and was used in the Promax awards magazine. Promax is a global community of professionals in the marketing and promotional television industry. If you have a concept that you want to bring to life, the Studio Commercial team can make it a reality.

Activewear Brazil (Pink Sun)

Since returning to work after baby number 2, I have mostly been concentrating on the admin side of things at the studio, living vicariously through the boys as they continue to do some amazing photography work. Having said that:

I recently had the great pleasure of working with Lienke de Bruin, the brains behind Activewear Brazil.

Already a supplier of high quality workout apparel made in Brazil, and being the entrepreneur that she is, Lienke decided she wanted more than what was on offer. So she did what any mother of 2 young boys would do, she decided to start her own label! The amazing result is the newly launched label Pink Sun. Designed in Australia and made in Brazil using the innovative sportswear fabric Supplex, Pink Sun is a refreshing combination of colourful prints & high quality gear, now available to the global market.

We had a fun day in the studio, working with gorgeous model Dani Bonnor. Shooting all of the amazing garments on a white background made the clothing to really pop and allowed for greater flexibility with graphic design post-production.

I loved working with Lienke, applaud her determined hard work, and wish her every success.

Thanks for reading, Vanessa.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is one of Cancer Council’s leading fundraising events and the largest, most successful event of its kind in Australia.

Studio Commercial was commissioned by advertising agency March One to create a range of imagery for the event. Cam photographed tea cups in studio while I was out taking pictures of kind people hosting a morning tea for their friends, workmates and / or family. Have a look at the final results below.

nib Annual Report

Annual report photography nib 2 men in wetsuits holding surfboards walking along Nobbys beach Newcastle

Sydney’s Rifle Media once again commissioned Studio Commercial to undertake photography for NIB’s branding and Annual Report.  We spent a couple of glorious days in Newcastle doing the photoshoot, it was a lot of fun.  Here are some of our favourite images (and some behind the scenes pics).

SBS Create STUDIO competition

Studio Commercial once again was commissioned to shoot and retouch the stills campaign for the Create STUDIO competition run by the arts channel of the same name. The competition finalists made 30 second promotional spots to be run on Foxtel’s channel 132 and the winner also received $10K, John Gosper was announced as the winner.  John, Brian & Anelise’s promo’s for the Arts Channel are now playing on Foxtel channel 132 and can also be seen online via the link below. The following images are what we put together for the three finalists work, enjoy!

Selling Houses Australia

Working with March One creative agency, we photographed the Selling Houses Australia hosts Shaynna Blaze, Andrew Winter & Charlie Albone for Foxtel’s Lifestyle channel print campaign. Here are a selection of images that were rolled out.

SBS World Movies "Summer of Sin"

Photographic Brief for SBS world movies adult summer of sin: Create smoking hot images to complement the films SBS will be playing over the summer.

This was shot at the Watson’s bay hotel with Creative direction by March One agency.

SBS STUDIO

Recently Studio Commercial photographed the four finalists artwork  for the  SBS “STUDIO” channel. (Yes confusing I know).

“STUDIO” is a creative arts channel on the Foxtel network.

The image making process involved photography as well as extensive retouching to create the final look.  We shot this image of Thom in a dark and scary basement in downtown Melbourne.  Thom Fraser was the winner and took home $10K and a billboard display in Kings Cross and his TVC to run as a promo for the channel.

Waratah's Carlton Draught

Here are some images for a Carlton Draught / Waratah’s promotion. The final imagery may look simple, but sight unseen is the considerable effort in makeup lighting and post production work.

To achieve the ideal lighting on both elements of the image. The hand/arm image elements were captured separately to the beer shots. In the case of the schooner we had to modify and blend in an existing glass shot with the hand holding a “dummy glass”.

Commissioning agency: The Zoo.

Heineken

We photographed this recent Heineken promo in Wentworth park Ultimo. The Art directors brief was to “recreate a little piece of Amsterdam in the middle of Sydney”. The shoot went so smoothly the crew had time for a tasty beverage in the park afterwards.

Come Dine With Me

This is a shoot we did for Foxtels Come Dine With Me. It has been popping up around the city on taxi backs. Splashing red wine around the studio sure makes a mess!

Bicycle photography Riding into 2013

When clients visit our beautiful studios, they always notice plenty of bicycles around. The majority of them are owned by Studio Commerial's Jason Doyle & Marcus Enno. Inspired by the beautiful machines they built I started planning to assemble my own commuter.

I have been riding from Manly to Sydney's CBD for well over a year and my old bike was struggling to keep up. It's good to treat yourself once in a while, especially with Xmas around the corner.

The building went more smoothly than I anticipated, Jason and Marcus guided me along the way nicely, so I definitely saved some time/mistakes there.

Thanks for reading. Pieter

SBS World Movies "Summer of Sin"

What better way to cool off while watching World Movies Adult than some karma sutra ice cubes.

This campaign labeled “summer of sin” was shot about as far away form Cuba as you can get.

Thanks to World Movies and March One for possibly the best shoot of the year!

Blow your hair not your cash

We recently shot this campagin for Blow Dry Bar in colaboration with Momentum Agency.

The location was Centennial park, The brief create beautiful black and white images of different hairstyles incorporating the “wind device”.

Dandelions where the trickiest of the wind devices but nothing a bit of hairspray couldn’t fix.

XXXX Island

Choosing the right day to do an outdoor location shoot is always a gamble, especially when there’s over 10 people involved.  After one false start postponement due to rain, we were very excited to collaborate once again with our good friends at Momentum Worldwide to produce the latest Lion beer imagery for XXXX Island.

World Movies Couch photoshoot

When the guys from March One Ad agency came to us with the concepts for SBS World Movies Adult we could hardly believe our luck!
The brief was to photograph a beautiful girl in lingerie perched precariously on an oiled up chesterfield.
This photo shoot went off without a hitch and proved the old saying “sex sells”!

Lifestyle You Photoshoot

The location for the Lifestyle channel’s “you” recent shoot had to the seen to be believed… Think marble tiles, countless columns, ornate gardens, huge swimming pool and everything with gold accents.

This was the perfect place to photography our “Buff” male stereotypes as their clothes magically disappeared and they are left standing in their undies.

Our photoshoot was done in conjunction with the making of the TV commercial and has to be one of the biggest productions to date.  Unfortunately it had been raining quite a lot beforehand and the film crew’s muddy boots left quite an impression on the white carpets…

Grand Designs - season 3

Working closely with Dynamix agency, we were pleased to be part of the creative team and photograph the Peter Maddison for Grand Designs Australia series three outdoor and print campaign.

Secret Meat Business "ssshhhhh"

Down a grimy alleyway in the dark of night you never know what you may find. In this case it was more pleasant than expected! The smell of sizzling Wagu, finely sliced Lardon and the Meat Maestro himself, Celebrity chef Adrian Richardson.

Perched on a ladder in the middle of the street, I found myself using phrase’s such as “Can you show me more meat?” and “Could you move your sausage to the left?”.

Thanks to Adrian, the crew and Dynamix for a really cool shoot.

Adriano Zumbo

Adriano Zumbo Photo Shoot from Studio Commercial.

We had alot of fun during this photo shoot of Pastry Celebrity Adriano Zumbo.

Recipes for salted caramel macaroons and scraps of paper with ingredient lists was strewn around his home kitchen. Gadgets and dehydrators were lined against every available wall.

Adriano Zumbo is certainly a warm personality and he was keen to experiment and whip up something on the fly.

The best part of the day was getting to take all of the desserts you see in the video back to the studio and sample every one.

Morgans Bicycles

We recently created a fun bicycle lifestyle photo shoot for Morgans Bicycles in downtown Surry Hills.

Being avid bike fans, it was great to photograph such beautiful craftsmanship. We love working with great clients like these.

Head on over to Morgans Bicycles’ Flickr to see the rest of the lifestyle images.

Have a look at the product photography on their main website, it’s particularly good-looking (hint hint: we did that too).

SBS World Movies Secret Cinema

We photographed the promos for the World Movies Secret Cinema in our studio in Sydney. Like it on Facebook, they have a tonne of competitions and interesting give aways on their page.

Can’t wait to see next year’s Secret Cinema!

Tip Top & Golden Crumpets

This food photo shoot was over two days. We photographed Golden Crumpets and Picklets as well as Tip Top Muffins and Raisin Toast.

The images are now being used at point of sale locations across Australia.

Sometimes we have to use a bit of creative problem-solving to make our images come to life. For the image of the boy below, we created a scruffy look by going into the backyard, grabbing handfuls of dirt and rubbing it into his clothes and face. As you can imagine, he really enjoyed this.

Client study: Wedding Gifts Direct

Q: You mentioned that you tried three photographers before using Studio Commercial. What were the differences between our photography and the other photographers?

We did try three other photographers before Studio Commercial and there is no comparison! The others were expensive and unprofessional in comparison – one even forgot his lighting equipment! – and the images themselves were inadequate for our needs.

A: A good relationship with the photographer is very important to us. Photographers, in common with other professions, have different skills and areas of specialization. We realized this after trying a wedding photographer. A wedding specialist, highly skilled in photographing weddings, may not necessarily be the one to shoot a showroom or products!

On the other hand, Jason was fantastic. He knew exactly what we wanted, and was able to get it right the first time. The phrase ‘above and beyond the call’ comes to mind; for all that it is a cliché. He was willing to keep redoing the shoot until all involved were completely satisfied, and maintained a professional and friendly demeanor the entire time.

Q: What do you use your photography for and why is it important?

A: A host of things! We like to use clean, professional photos to showcase our showroom and storefront, and thus the images need to be a showcase for what we do. We are in the business of helping the dreams of couples for their wedding come true and any imagery we use is required bring this message across.

We also use photography for specials, gifts that we grant to our customers. Being an online business, we need good quality, crisp photos that showcase the quality of our range and highlight the nature of the gift selection we offer. A good example is this lovely picnic basket, which includes the bottle of Moët. Poor-quality images would give a poor impression and so they must meet the same standard as our service.

We also maintain a blog, which is the first place to go for news and updates about the range and services we offer. As such, its appearance must uphold the same quality as our product images and showroom; we need a quality sidebar photo. This is especially important for potential clients, as they must feel that they can trust us to assist with their wedding planning, and help with their special day.

Grand Designs - season 2

We enjoyed being involved in the Grand Design photo shoot for 2012, especially after we had such a blast for the award winning 2011 shoot.

Grand Designs Australia – series 2 – photoshoot from Studio Commercial.

What to expect after a corporate photo shoot

Your photo shoot is done. It’s time to reap the benefits.

Here’s what you can expect after the photo shoot:

  • Firstly, tell your photographer if you have a deadline. Especially if your proposal or advertisement is due tomorrow.
  • Your photographer will do some minor adjustments to your photos such as tonal corrections. We’ll then send previews over to your inbox as PDFed proofs.
  • Have a good look at the images in the proof. Each one is uniquely named. Once you’ve made a selection, email or call to tell us your choice.
  • We treat each selected shot with some tender loving care. This means that we get rid of skin imperfections and minor blemishes, photoshop unruly hair strands away and we might do some bigger details like cleaning up the background or fixing up your shirt.
  • We will send you a link to the file. Once you click on the link, your image selections will start downloading to your computer.
  • Unzip the folder using your favourite archive programs and save your images somewhere safe that you won’t forget!

Tip: Keep your proofs in a prominent place on your computer. We keep all of our images indefinitely so if you need to order a more serious or friendly look, we can edit another image so you don’t have to do a complete re-shoot.

Planet Cake Shoot

This shoot was for a Foxtel “outdoor media campaign” – Promotion material appeared on taxis, bus shelters, postcards and online.

We photographed the earth-shaped cake and Paris Cutler in studio, along the recording of the television commercial (see: Eat Yourself Sexy as an example).

The artwork was created by shooting the individual image elements. The globe cake, cake slice, cake holder and Paris was photographed separately in studio then this was all retouched together in post production using Photoshop.

The postcard promo for Planet Cake

Planet Cake is a reality TV show that follows the ups and downs of a custom-made cake store that caters to high-profile people like Rihanna and Nicole Kidman. The owner, Paris Cutler, was a stock broker before she bought the company in 2003.

Watch the trailer.

Australian Hotelier Magazine

We often have to create a photograph according to a sketch.

This was a job done in the 13th hour on a Saturday morning for Dynamix. We’re quite happy with it.

Bicycling Australia: Fashion Shoot

It’s always a busy day when you have five models, more than a dozen wardrobe changes and sixteen images to create.

By 9am our studio was covered in cycling gear and our clothes rack was used to stack bicycles that cost more than a small car.

This was the third year that we’ve shot the Bicycling Australia annual fashion shoot, it’s the largest segment of the magazine and we’re really excited to continue to be a part of it.

It’s really fun for the models to work with the props, most of them were riders and could appreciate the gear. We’re really passionate about cycling as well, so I love getting the little details right. It has to look realistic because cyclists are going to know at a glance if the model is holding the handlebars the wrong way.

The client wanted the photography to be fun and approachable. Cycling can be intimidated so we wanted to make this gear look easily accessible to those that are just starting out. It was loads of fun to shoot something that we’re so enthusiastic about.

Bicycling Australia: Mag Fashion Shoot from Studio Commercial.

Active Retirees Cover

We had less than an hour before a storm hit our way and we were in the middle of a golf course, photographing the cover for Active Retirees Magazine.

During the shoot, I was thinking about how quickly our hour was pushed into half an hour by the weather.

The client was very driven to replicate the mock-up, which had clear blue skies. I shot according to the mock up first and once I knew we had gotten the image, we quickly moved to a different location so a cloudier piece of sky acting as a backdrop.

I wanted to add some contrast to make the image pop, make it more dynamic.

The sun was hitting the model’s head quite nicely so I used a main light to fill in the shadows. By now the wind was really battling against us so my first assistant held down the lighting equipment. My second assistant held the reflector just hovering over the grass below the dark golf club to fill in the shadows.

I’m really happy with this picture. It was created in half an hour and I feel like it really builds on the concept of a happy, active retiree.

The image on the left hand side is the brief, the image on the right is our final product and the image that ran on the cover.

Five tips on photographing to a brief

The drawing on the left hand side was the sketch we were given, the image on the right is our product.

For a first-time advertising photographer, a brief can be intimidating. This is our top five tips that will walk you from initial concept to completion.

Shooting to a brief can seem like a complicated set up at a first, but breaking the process down to smaller parts can make the photo shoot run smoothly.

1. Keep in mind the mock up sketch (also known as scamp) may not have a perspective that is true to life. As the photographer, it’s important to choose the camera angle and lens that will come the closest to the sketch. It’s also your job to communicate to the art director why some things will work, and others won’t.

2. Depending on the production, the props and styling may be organised by the art director or could be left to you. Always be specific.

3. Lighting can make or break your photo shoot. Choose the lighting type. Is it hard or soft light? Are there shadows that illustrate where the art director wants the lights to be placed? Take the time to think about the direction of the light and also take into account colour. Chat to the art director prior to the shoot about the look and feel they’re going for.

4. Often elements in the image are shot separately and combined in post. This is because of time constraints and sheer impossibility. In the above shot, we photographed the food and chairs at the start, then we photographed the women in the background and lastly, the main model, Sarah Wilson. All of this was layered together in Photoshop.

Before you go to your photo shoot, create an outline for what should be photographed first and what can wait.

5. Throughout post, make sure you continue to work closely with the art director. Send them what you’ve done intermittently and get feedback.  Most of these will be minor changes i.e. make the strawberry slightly bigger.

Studio Commercial has shot high-end projects for brands like Foxtel, Bluetongue lager, Coca Cola and Krispy Kreme.

Five tips for Real Estate Photography

Marcus first published this article for REI NSW. While we’re not real estate photographers, as commercial photographers, we do photograph interior and exterior architecture. This article is aimed at real estate agents that do their own photography.

Make a strong first impression on potential buyers by following these photography rules for properties.

Taking well composed and exposed photos of properties is a core part of any real estate business. It can persuade a potential buyer to view a property and attract walking traffic to your window display.

Using the following tried and true techniques, you can produce near-professional looking images without the need to buy expensive equipment.

1. Compose the image

While image composition is a complicated science, here are a few basic tricks:

  • Before taking a photograph, move distracting items from the scene such as a car in the driveway, a garbage sign or a ‘For sale’ sign. For interior shots, tidy up the room so it looks uncluttered.
  • Highlight positive areas of a property.
  • Take shots from different angles so nothing obstructs an important part of the scene.
  • Review the scene to ensure the vertical and horizontal lines are perpendicular.
  • Move slightly to the left or right, or back a few steps, before taking a photo. This method can significantly improve composition.

A tripod provides the steadiness necessary for longer exposures and makes composing images easier as you can have a long, controlled look at the scene.

2. Invest in the right hardware for you

Digital SLRs and compact cameras that allow manual settings are ideal for real estate photography. They offer features and flexibility that a standard point-and-shoot camera can’t. They also have many different lenses and accessories to choose from, many of which are ideal for photographing properties.

For example, a 17mm wide-angle lens can capture more of a scene than is possible with a standard lens. A wide-angle lens also allows you to stand closer to the subject and still fit it in the frame. This means you can ensure unwanted foreground objects such as mailboxes don’t interfere with the focal point.

3. Control the lighting

Take your camera every time you visit a property. The end result can vary depending on the time of day a photo is taken. For example, shooting at dusk and early in the morning will create a more dramatic, vibrant image.

  • Exterior photos: Try to shoot on a day when the sky is blue and contains clouds. Shoot when a cloud covers the sun so the light is diffused, and dark shadows are barely noticeable. Even bright, overcast days can provide good lighting for exterior shots of properties.
  • Interior photos: Photograph the interior on a bright but overcast day. This prevents streams of stark sunlight from entering the room. For the best illumination inside, combine artificial and natural light. Let natural light from outside enter the room to augment the artificial light.

If you are getting serious, consider buying an external flash. It will bounce light off the ceiling and provide ‘fill flash’ – a photographic technique used to brighten deep shadow areas. An external flash can also ensure you minimise refection in glass.

4. Use photo-editing software

Programs like Adobe Photoshop open a world of creative possibilities. A short course will help you get the most out of the software. But even agents with a very basic understanding of the program can master the following:

  • Use the crop tool to remove distracting elements or shift the focal point of an image.
  • Adjust the brightness of a photo to make it more vibrant. This tool is particularly useful for real estate agents who don’t have time to wait for ideal weather conditions to take photos of a property.
  • Modify saturation levels to enhance the impact of the colours in your photograph. For example, you can make the sky a deeper blue or trees a lush green.
  • Use the shadow highlights tool to brighten shadowed areas and darken highlighted areas. For example, an interior shot may have a harsh stream of sunlight coming through a window. With this tool you can soften the light rays and lift dark tones in the background. Warning: this tool should be used with care as it’s very easy to look fake with this.

5. Enlist the experts

While these rules will instantly lift the quality of your photos, a professional photographer invests in equipment and knowledge to capture a property in the best possible light – literally.

When hiring a photographer, make sure they have:

  • A professional lighting system with multiple lights for different applications.
  • Advanced skills in Adobe Photoshop to professionally enhance your photos.
  • A variety of lenses to suit different types of spaces.
  • The experience and creative vision to know what gives a photograph impact.

No one expects real estate agents to be expert photographers, as much as you wouldn’t call a photographer when looking for a house. Using the services of a professional often saves time and resources, making it money well spent.

Stirling Mortlock

Stirling Mortlock Photo Shoot from Studio Commercial.

Rugby legend Stirling Mortlock stepped into our studio for one day of photography. Watch the video to see man vs fish.

This advert will be in the October 2011 issue of Australian Men’s Health. Also keep an eye out for posters at health stores country-wide.

Our thanks goes to Herbs of Gold for the fantastic shoot. A special shout out to Diana for making everything seamless.

Background knowledge on Stirling:

The year 2000, was a landmark year for Stirling – he became the fastest Australian to reach 50 and 100 Test points, he scored the most points and highest number of penalties [16] by any Australian in his first five Tests and created history by becoming the first Australian to score 20 points or more in four consecutive Tests.

In 2006, Stirling was passed the honour of becoming the 73rd player to Captain the Wallabies. Stirling lead the team from the front and they claimed the Cook Cup from England.Stirling received his greatest honour when he was asked to Captain the Wallabies at the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France.

Stirling’s uncanny ability to score tries and kick goals has positioned him third on the all-time list of Australian Test point scorers (with 463 points) and he holds the mantle as the highest ACT Brumbies all-time point-scorer (with 875 points).

Eat Yourself Sexy Photo Shoot

It seemed odd to have freshly prepared lobster and salads at 7am on a Tuesday morning, but that’s just what was laid out on black perspex at the Foxtel Studios. We were photographing Sarah Wilson and a slew of women for her new TV show, Eat Yourself Sexy.

This was a photo shoot with a lot of moving parts and our thanks goes out to the crew at Foxtel that helped us juice up our lights. Thanks also to the Dynamix guys.

Food shoot with Yalla

This was my first time assisting at a food shoot.

I fell head over heels in love when Cherie, the food stylist offered us “mineral water with lemon barley cordial and mint” as we stepped through the door.

It was fantastic to see people getting excited about cooking good produce. For each dish, we spent an hour perfecting the shot: adding herbs and sauces, taking away an almond sliver or adding crushed pepper.

Finally, after photographing the food at it’s best, we got to eat it. I may have pigged out.

The thing I enjoyed about this shoot was that it was natural. Everyone was down to earth and relaxed. There was no glycerine nor dry ice.

It was just honest, fresh food prepared with love.

And you can never go wrong with that.

Grand Designs - season 1

The Grand Designs project we photographed has won two Astras. Woohoo! A big thanks to Dynamix for working with us on this.

Behind the scenes shots 😉

NRL players and NRG

In December last year, I had a shoot for NRG Strength Bands. High profile NRL players spent the day at the studio: Todd Carney, Sam Thaiday, Ben Hannant, Mitchell Pearce and Ben Barba.

We had an outline of how the client wanted to display the product and we also created improv images.

The day before Dave and I did some lighting tests, then spent an hour before the shoot fine tuning the glowing, edgy look we were trying to achieve.

We designed the lighting style specifically for the shoot and used image treatment afterwards to give a gritty, tough look. I also added contrast in post-production. It took about half an hour to edit each image, which I was quite happy about.

It was a really interesting visual project.

Vodka and Whiskey Photoshoot

I had heaps of fun giving orders from my comfortable chair to our Managing Director, Jason, during this shoot.

This was the first photo shoot I was involved with after breaking my hip earlier this year. I’ve been doing alot of retouching so it was great to take control of a shoot.

We had a great cocktail stylist on site, which made the whole day a breeze.
